Philosophy

The honor of being called a teacher carries with it an awesome challenge akin to an artist given a bare canvas aspiring to create a 'masterpiece'. The obligation a teacher has, is to use all  of their skills to try to create such a masterpiece, wherein the canvas is our students and the paints are our classroom materials aided by personal motivation and guidance. To what extent such prized art is realized comes from a mutual partnership---the teacher's ability to inspire, impart, and instruct coupled with the students' God given aptitude and eagerness to learn.

Dear Kindergarten Parents--  My name is Mrs. Lisa and I am the Kindergarten teacher at Our Lady Of Peace School.  As a kindergarten teacher for over 25 years (this is my 16th year at OLP), it is such a joy to see some of my former students at OLP and how they’ve matured and gone on to become ‘great works of art’ in our Catholic community!!!    I sincerely look forward to teaching this year’s class, getting to know all of your children, and working together with parents so that we may truly have a successful and enjoyable year!!

The week of February 13 - February 17, 2012

Language Arts

The children are practicing listening to find story detail in order to know the beginning, middle and ending of the stories read. The stories this week are big book I'm a Jolly Farmer by Julie Lacome and book David's Drawings by Cathryn Falwell. The children  are continuing to practice identifying the beginning, middle and ending sound of words. They are also continuing to practice blending these sounds together to read words. The children are  practicing writing sentences that have words that start with the letter sound being worked on for the week.Last week the children made a sentence with /w/ sound words (The wacky walrus wears a wig and wiggles.) along with a picture for the sentence. This week the class will write a sentence for the /x/ sound with /x/ sound words at the beginning and end of the words.    ***The children are still learning and using new high frequency words --  do,what,two,etc...  and putting them in sentences as well as reviewing the high frequency words they have learned already -- a,I,the, can,my,like,to and others. A list of the words  will be sent home this week so that they can be practiced. The children will be learning the letter Xx and its sound /ks/. We will continue to practice the word families and making more flip charts soon for these families (to bring home and practice). If one has not been made yet, please help your child find an empty shoe box with lid and have them decorate it any way that they would like. Please place a label on it saying Practice Box. The items that your child has brought home and will be brought home can go in it for frequent practice (items such as high frequency word cards, letter cards, flip word family cards,etc..

 Handwriting

The children are practicing the strokes for writing and holding a pencil correctly.  If they can also have added practice at home with the strokes mentioned, their names, and added help holding their pencil correctly that would be extremely beneficial  (many are holding their pencil incorrectly and are having trouble with coloring and writing appropriately because of this). *** Please remind your child to be careful with their coloring and work (to slow down and take their time). To want to hand in work they would be proud of (always to try and do their best). This helps them form good work habits at an early age and allows them to feel more responsible.   **** Please check and sign all homework given ****

Thank You!

Math

The children are learning to identify numbers and number sets that are greater than, fewer than, and equal to other numbers and number sets. Last week the class tried identifying numbers and number amounts that had 1 or 2 more than (greater than) other numbers and number amounts. The class attempted to create number amounts themselves that had 1 or 2 more than other numbers and number amounts. This week the class will practice identifying and creating number and number amounts that have 1 or 2 less than (fewer than) other number and number amounts. The class will also practice using the number line to be able to accomplish identifying more than and fewer than as well as putting numbers in sequencial order if they are not or if any are missing.

Religion

The children will be discussing being a part of a family and how family members help each other through loving, caring and kind actions. The children will learn about the Holy Family and how Mary,Joseph and Jesus showed their love for each other by their actions and deeds. The children will understand that they are a part of God's family the Church and that God is their heavenly Father who loves them always. We will practice saying the "Our Father" in our prayer moments. Our Saint of the Week is Saint Valentine (Feast Day  Feb 14th) and hear the story of Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes (Feast Day  Feb 10th)The children will create a cutout grotto with Our Lady of Lourdes similar to the place (grotto) Bernadette saw Our Lady standing in Lourdes France.

Activities

About Homework above: Again, please remind them to try their best when writing their letters on the guidelines,to touch the lines and work from top to bottom & left to right (allow them to look at the guideline sheet to see how the letters are formed). Allow your child to find magazine pictures with you assisting when needed  or to draw/color their own pictures carefully and then glue into the Comp. bk. Try to let your child sound out and write the labels for the pictures that they have into the Comp book but if needed you can help them spell the picture label (let them write it though). Thanks!
